Community BBQ brings people and firefighters together

Weed, Calif.–Firefighters who helped battle the Boles Fire are called the hero’s of the City of Weed.

But that’s not how they see it.

“I could speak as a whole. We all feel we know what we did but this is what we do,” said firefighter Mark Jorgensen.

Friday they’re taking a break. Enjoyed the community they served and saved all week.

“This is for everyone to come and have a good time and just get together and socialize and forget about what happened for a couple hours.”

Casey Day said he just had to give back…back to the firefighters who by Friday had the Boles Fire nearly contained at 500 acres. Anumber of firefighters are from the very town they’re working to protect.

“I witnessed two of the houses I lived in burn down to the ground to the foundations,” said Jorgensen.

With the help of Mt. Shasta resort and numerous donations, Day hosted a community BBQ.

“Just so they know they’re not alone.”

People like Marilyn Rainville. Her house is still standing but suffered smoke damage.

“The community gathering right now is basically a re-group, a re-birth kind of stress free,” said Rainville.

And firefighter Mark Jorgensen who said he’s humbled to see the community he lives in high spirits despite the worst.

The community just sticks together as you see behind me it’s a strong community to live in and it’s something to be proud of.”

All of the food and drinks were donated. Day said he just hopes the support will continue into the winter when he says they’ll need it the most.
