An early morning structure fire brought out four engines and police to an east medford neighborhood.
Around 2:30 Wednesday morning, fire crews were dispatched to a two-story house on Papago Drive near McAndrews.
Following reports of heavy smoke in the area, and a possible house fire. Officials with the Medford Fire Department say a balcony on the second floor was on fire and the response was just in time.
Medford Fire Battalion Chief Ken Goodson said, “It was at that critical stage where you need to make sure you get the fire out. It’s either gonna go up to the attic or inside, and fortunately we caught it right at that moment before it broke in.”
One man was home at the time of the fire, and officials say he was disoriented, but otherwise ok. An ambulance was brought out, but was ultimately not needed.
We spoke with neighbor, Bill Rushing, who says his dog alerted him to the blaze before crews even arrived!
“Well, my dog kept kicking me, little dog, she kept kicking me on my side and she kinda woke me up and I could smell the smoke.”
We’re told fire crews arrived less than a minute later. The official cause of the fire has not yet been determined and that investigation will continue today.
