Expect delays on I-5 starting Monday

Phoenix, Ore.– The usual scene near Phoenix on I-5 is clear of traffic in both directionsbut come Monday that will all change.

Gary Leaming with the Oregon Department of Transportation said both lanes of Interstate 5 in both directions be singled down to a single lane in each direction.

He said contractors with the Fern Valley Interchange project need to get to work half a mile north of the Phoenix exit and it’ll take them 25 days to finish.

“We need to allow the contractor time to put in a drainage pipe across I-5 its about 4 feet in diameter to do that unfortunately he has to open trench across the freeway,” said Leaming.

But some who drive I-5 regularly said this could cause some inconvenience.

“It’ll be a bit frustrating but nothing too bad. Kind of been used to construction back and forth here in Phoenix for the past few years,” said Jonathan Keiber.

Leaming said, “37,000 vehicles on average are on I-5 in that area.”

He said if you don’t take an alternate route like highway 99 or North Phoenix Road you could be seeing a three mile back-up in both directions.

“We are really serious if you don’t pay attention you will be stuck in a que and you will be late to your appointments.”

So Leaming said to keep your commute running smooth and the highway running smoother, take the advice.
