Jackson County Public Health release more safety protocols to halt spread of chickenpox

Ashland, Ore. — Jackson County Public Health and the Ashland School District announced that they have expanded the criteria of susceptible students that will be excluded from school in an effort to halt the spread of chickenpox.

The following exclusions, as directed by Jackson County Public Health, are in place:

Susceptible students will be excluded from school during day 10 through day 21 after exposure to chickenpox. This will apply to students within an individual classroom or learning setting.

Chickenpox exposure would consist of having a household member with the disease; or being in the same classroom as a person who develops chickenpox or was incubating the disease, at any time from the day before to the 5th day after the rash begins.

Two doses of chickenpox vaccine are recommended. Persons who have received at least 1 dose of vaccine before or after exposure need not to be excluded.

Therefore a child who is immune to chickenpox, either because he or she has already had chickenpox, or from vaccination, will be allowed to attend school. Otherwise he/she will be excluded from attending school from day 10 through 21 from the date of exposure. That time-frame allows the child to receive a fist dose of chickenpox vaccine, and then continue in school.

Jackson County Public Health also announced that there will be a chickenpox vaccination clinic, hosted by La Clinica, to assist with children and all community members needing to be vaccinated for chickenpox. This vaccine will be offered to everyone in the community free of charge. This is a special outreach event and is not part of La Clinica’s normal service delivery.
