Jacksonville, Ore. — Medical marijuana dispensaries will be legal in Oregon in March, but some cities are acting to prevent them from opening in their town.
On Tuesday night Jacksonville City Council members discussed an ordinance that would ban medical marijuana dispensaries in the town. Local residents have mixed feelings on whether or not the dispensaries should be legal.
Ellee Celler, a Jacksonville resident, said she doesn’t see any downside to having medical marijuana dispensaries in the town.
“I think it would be beneficial for our economic health and it’s better to have them than to ban them,” Celler said.
She also said the reason she loves Jacksonville is because it has something for everyone. But Rusty Keller, another Jacksonville resident, disagrees and thinks dispensaries would take away from the town’s charm.
“Since this is a more retail tourist type destination I don’t really see a need for it in the area,” Keller said.
Earlier this month councilors in Phoenix voted against a medical marijuana dispensary ban after hearing public comment from more than a dozen people. Temporary bans have already been put in place in Coos Bay, Hillsboro, and Tualatin.
