Jury selection underway for Medford murder trial

Medford, Ore. — Jury selection is underway for a trial for a Medford man accused of stabbing and killing his ex-girlfriend.

According to prosecutors, Jose Valencia stabbed and his ex-girlfriend, 38-year-old Maria Rodriguez to death outside her Medford apartment in September 2013.

The trial begins Tuesday. It will be the second time Valencia’s case has been presented before a jury. In 2014 a mistrial was declared after a juror got a hold of a list of witness names.

Police said Valencia was waiting for Rodriguez to return to her Table Rock Road apartment on Sunday September 1st, 2013.

When she did, they said he jumped out from behind some bushes and stabbed her and chased away witnesses at knife point.

Investigators said the two were in some sort of relationship, and called the crime a domestic violence homicide.

Dozens of witnesses will testify at the trial, which could last into next week.
