Lakehead, Calif. — A Nigerian man drowned in Shasta Lake on Wednesday afternoon after he went into the water to cool off.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said the 33-year-old Nigerian man, who was in the U.S. on a Visa, was picnicking with a friend when they decided to go into the lake to cool off around 4:00 p.m.
Deputies said the man did not know how to swim.
According to police, the pair walked on an old submerged road when the man slipped or stepped off the edge of the road. He went underwater and did not return to the surface.
Deputies said the man’s friend dove into the water to search for him, but she was unable to locate him. Three people came to assist but they were also unable to find the man.
A dive team was eventually able to locate the victim around 5:50 p.m. in approximately 14 feet of water.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the identity of the man.
