Medford Police checking in on area sex offenders

320x180_50715B00-BSWVQMedford, Ore. — Medford Police are actively searching for sex offenders who are out of compliance with their registration requirements.

They began sweeping the city Thursday, in search of sexual predators and offenders.

Police say they spoke with 16 people, of those, 2 were found in violation and charged with failure to register.

That can be a misdemeanor or felony charge, depending on the original crime and reason for a person falling out of compliance.

Police say sex offenders often violate registration laws prompting police to stage these surprise checks periodically.

Currently the Jackson County Jail website lists nearly 2 dozen registered sex offenders currently in custody there.
