Obama honors fallen officers

(NBC News) President Obama on Friday honored law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Mr. Obama spoke at the 34th annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service in Washington, D.C.

“We cannot erase every darkness or danger from the duty that you’ve chosen. We can offer you the support you need to be safer,” he said. “We can make the communities you care about and protect safer as well. We can make sure you have the resources you need to do your job. We can do everything we have to do to combat the poverty that plagues to many communities in which you have to serve.”

After addressing those gathered, the president placed a flower in a memorial wreath in memory of 131 officers killed while serving their communities last year.

During his address, the president called police officers the country’s heroes and called on citizens to support law enforcement officials and give them the resources needed to make their jobs safer.
