ODOT works to prepare drivers for holiday travel

Medford, Ore. — Oregon transportation officials are hoping to save holiday drivers a headache as the busiest travel day begins.

According to AAA, more than 98 million people will be traveling 50 or more miles this holiday — the most on record — and it’s because of lower gas prices. But, here locally ODOT wants to prepare drivers. They says being prepared will not only save you time, but also can save your life.

Winter weather is proving it’s presence, dropping snow in higher passes and heavy rain throughout Southern Oregon. Combine that with more drivers this holiday and ODOT has some reminders to keep you safe.

“Their vehicle isn’t prepared, they don’t have chains, they don’t know how to put them on. They drive too fast for the conditions and they spin out. They can either cause a crash or cause a delay”, says Gary Leaming of ODOT.

ODOT reminds drivers that it’s illegal to talk/text or otherwise use your cell phone while driving, but there is a way to stay up on current road conditions. Tune your radio to 1610 AM or log on to tripcheck.com before you leave, or dial 511.
