OLCC continues ‘listening sessions’ on recreational marijuana

Klamath Falls, Ore. – The Oregon Liquor Control Commission is continuing with a series of ‘listening sessions’ across the state.

Retail marijuana sales will be legal in Oregon late next year…and the O.L.C.C. is asking you how it should be done.

“We’re interested in the distribution of it.” Notes Merrill City Marshal Brian Bicknell. “How retail stores should be regulated, security systems and such – because that poses a concern for law enforcement.”

Keeping marijuana away from kids is a priority for many.

“I’m just really concerned about the packaging, because I am an expecting mother.” Says Destiny Summers of Klamath Falls.

Medical marijuana card holder Danny Torres is concerned that he can’t take his medicine out of the state…

“I hope to be able to be safe, and continue – to be able to get a federal card, so when I go to Texas I don’t go to prison.”

Others want an outright ban on the recreational sale of marijuana in Klamath County.

“The measure failed in Klamath County.” Points out Richard Mauro. “So I think we should be exempt from having that product here.”

About 90 people attended Thursday’s hearing at Oregon Tech, the seventh in a series of meetings happening around the state.

The O.L.C.C. hopes to have a set of rules in place by November.

The state will begin taking applications for retail sales in January of next year, with sales getting underway sometime in late 2016.
