With temperatures rising near the 100 degree mark, many people are planning to spend the weekend outside.
But local animal experts are reminding pet owners that hot weather can mean danger for pets.
Veterinarians at the Medford Animal Hospital say that it’s best if pets can stay indoors.
They don’t suggest taking your pets on errands and leaving them in the car even if it’s just a few moments.
“Even with the windows cracked, the car and reach temperatures of 30 degrees higher than the [outside] air. So if it’s 100 degrees out it will be 130 in the car. Cats and dogs cannot perspire like we can, they pant, and it’s just not a good idea.”
If you do plan to be outside with your pet, experts advise there be plenty of shade and water available.
Also be on the lookout for symptoms of heatstroke, like vomiting, or shortness of breath.
If your pet has those signs contact your emergency Veterinarian.
