Buford, Ga. — (WXIA News) Investigators say the Georgia parents who locked up their now-14 year old son in a basement room for more than a year claimed they were simply disciplining the boy at a Thursday court hearing.
After the hearing, the magistrate judge denied the request for bond by parents Recardo Wimbush, a former Georgia Tech football star, and his wife Therian Wimbush, a U.S. Navy veteran. They will stay in jail, for now.
They are each charged with Child Cruelty in the First Degree, and False Imprisonment.
Both parents admit that they locked their now-14 year old son, the oldest of ten children, in a small room in the basement of their Buford home for more than a year with no light bulb in the fixture and a jug for a bathroom.
The reason The parents said he was a difficult child, so they were disciplining him, according to the Gwinnett County Police detective who testified at the parents’ hearing.
Det. Felicia Churchill testified that the boy did not complain to investigators about his treatment.
“He said he did not like it, but that he deserved it,” Churchill said. “He said that he was disobedient and that he felt that his mother was just trying to fix him.”
Churchill said that Therian Wimbush claimed she was basing the boy’s punishment on Biblical principles.
