Temporary air quality station set up in Ashland

ASHLAND, ORE. — On the rooftop of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, crew members hired by the US Forest Service spent Thursday afternoon setting up atemporary air quality monitoring station.

“To get this valuable information, you have to be able to get it, or it’s not doing anyone any good, and we are using satellite telemetry,” said Gary Curcio, a air quality specialist.

The Department of Environmental Quality, or D.E.Q., has 8 permanent air monitoring stations in Southern Oregon. But with recent fires, 4 temporary stations in Ashland, Jacksonville, Eagle Point and Tiller are being installed to help give more precise readings.

Curcio says the data will be collected and uploaded to the western regional climatic center website.

The stations will likely stay up for the remainder of fire season.

“This station stays until we know in the area that the smoke reduction has gone down tremendously,” said Curcio.
