Weed Elementary & High school closed until Tuesday

Weed, Calif.– Classes at Weed Elementary and Weed High school are on hold until Tuesday. After a 375 acre blaze tore the city apart Monday, and parts of both schools.

At Weed Elementary a jungle gym is mangled when flames landed on the school’s property.

“I was so so scared,” said Julianna Cordova, a student at Weed Elementary.

Alisa Cummings is the principal of Weed Elementary. She said thanks to the quick response most of the school is still standing.

“I made up a game plan to move the kids further back. Then loaded the buses and evacuated the are with police support.”

The fire was stopped after damaging four classrooms and part of the playground.

“Alot of smoke damage clean up. One of the buildings will be closed. Our 1st through 3rd grade classes will be closed.”

Cummings said there will be extra councilors to help them cope with the unimaginable damage and destruction.

“Just making sure they feel safe. I bet about 40-50% percent of our families are homeless.”

Principal Cummings said they haven’t decided when or if students will need to make up the days.

College of the Siskiyous will be back open Wednesday.
