(NBC) – U.S. retail sales cratered in March in a record-breaking fall amid the coronavirus pandemic.
With thousands of stores closed and millions ordered to stay home, retail sales fell 8.7% last month.
Clothing stores took a major hit, down more than 501%.
Auto sales also dropped more than 25%.
One bright spot: grocery store sales rose 26% as Americans stocked up on food and supplies to ride out the pandemic.
