New sports facility proposed for Medford

Medford, Ore. — Medford could soon get a big financial boost from tourism if a new sports facility is built. But the plan must first win the approval of the Medford City Council.

Medford City Manager Brian Sjothun says he, Travel Medford, and the Medford Chamber had wanted a conference center–but research showed a sports center would be a better prospect. The Chamber says the facility could also help grow tourism.

“We’d try to build a facility that would be used pretty much three hundred and sixty five days out of the year and… where a portion of that would still be used for conferences and trade shows,” said Sjothun. He added specific plans for the layout, price and location of the center can’t be determined unless the Medford City Council is interested in pursuing the project further.

The city council will look at the plans in January.
