Program teaches at risk youth proper work ethic

Galice, Ore.– Josephine County parks and boating facilities are getting a much needed sprucing up and it’s all thanks to OYCC, Oregon Youth Conservation Corps.

For the past four weeks five team members have been a part of the Summer Marine Board Program, re-painting faded parking lots and boat ramps, picking up trash and clearing vegetation.

The 6 week program teaches at risk youth leadership skills and hopes to inspire good work ethic.

Amber Linehan is this group’s leader.

“It teaches them skills that they can carry on to other jobs and even money management because they get checks and make plans to buy certain things,” says Linehan.

Team members range in age from 14 to 23,  live in Josephine County and are either not on track to graduate high school, high school drop outs, or unable to attend college due to grades or financial reasons.
