Quake swarm rattles Mt. Hood - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

Mount Hood, Ore. (KGW) — A swarm of small earthquakes has been detected on Mount Hood, about 10 miles southeast of Government Camp.

The first was about 6:40 p.m. Sunday and continued to about 7:30 Monday morning. The quakes were between magnitude 1.5 and 2.2. They were shallow, one to five kilometers in depth.

There is no cause for alarm, said Ian Madin with the Oregon Department of Geology & Mineral Industries.

“These appear to be related to small amounts of movement on unknown fault systems, not related to magma moving within the volcano,” Madin explained. “We get one of these every couple of years and they can get up to the mid fours. We expect to see more activity there in the future.”
