Thousands flee California fires

NC_cafires110914_700x394Calif. — (NBC News) Wildfires continue to burn out of control in northern California, where more than a thousand homes have been destroyed and thousands of others are threatened.

Several thousands of people have had to evacuate homes in the path of the Valley Fire burning in Lake County. About a 1,000 of them have resorted to living in tents at the Napa County Fair Grounds, one of three shelters that have been set up for them.

It will still be another day or two before they are allowed back into their neighborhoods.

The Valley Fire destroyed more than 100 homes within its first 15 hours, a testimony to how dry conditions are.

The fire has burned 61,000 acres with only five percent containment, and is being blamed for at least one death.
