(NBC News) Pope Francis waded into the U.S. presidential campaign Thursday when asked about Donald Trump.
The pontiff said a person who would build a wall on the U.S./Mexican border is “not Christian.”
Trump sounded surprised when he learned Pope Francis had questioned his faith.
“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian,” Trump said, before placing the blame on Pope Francis’ comments on the Mexican government.
“They’re using the pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump claimed.
