AAA: Memorial Day travel busiest in 10 years

Medford, Ore — It’s been a dangerous week on Southern Oregon’s roads with fatal accidents on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Now with Memorial Day weekend traditionally one of the busiest travel weekends of the year upon us experts are urging drivers to be cautious.

According to AAA the number of cars traveling 50 miles or more to their destination this Memorial Day weekend will increase by 5.3 percent. The highest amount in a decade.

That’s why the Oregon Department of Transportation says because of that, it’s best to be extra prepared if you plan on hitting the road.

That includes making extra time for any travel mishaps that may happen along the way.

Make sure you’re well rested, be prepared for extra traffic on the road and leave that extra time so you don’t feel pinched to get to your destination,” said ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming.

Medford Police say they’re also increasing patrols this weekend in anticipation of the holiday.

Along with other local law enforcement agencies extra officers will be on the roads looking for drunk or distracted drivers.
