Boy invents device to remind parents of children in hot cars

Brentwood, Tenn. – (WKRN News) An 11-year-old Nashville student has invented a device that could save lives.

Andrew Pelham said he felt compelled to do something after learning around 38 children die each year from being left in hot cars.

On his Web site, Andrew specifically mentions the story about a Nashville family who lost their baby boy last summer after he was accidentally left in his mother’s minivan.

“I’m hoping if I can save one life with my invention, I can say that my invention was successful,” Andrew told Nashville’s News 2.

Andrew entered The Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors, which is held each year in Akron, Ohio, the rubber capital of the United States.

The only rule for contestants is that they must use rubber bands in their invention. Andrew thought it might be a great, cheap way to tackle his goal to help parents remember when they have a child in the back seat.

Andrew created the E-Z Baby Saver and won second place, taking home $500.
