Easy supermarket savings

(CNN) So you’re not a fan of clipping coupons or sorting through the weekly specials. Don’t worry, there are still ways to save some money at the supermarket.

Start with the perimeter of the store. That’s where the produce section, the meat and seafood sections, and the dairy cases usually are, avoiding the middle aisles of prepackaged snacks can not only help avoid impulse buys and save you money, it can make for a healthier basket too.

When comparing the prices of brands, or when comparing brand names versus the store’s brand, the key number is the unit price — the price per pound, per ounce or per pint. You’ll likely see it on the shelf next to the item’s price.

Items on sale and items purchased in bulk can be a great way to save money, but only if you’re going to use all of it. Otherwise it’s just a waste of money and of food. Before putting those items in your cart especially dairy items like yogurt check the expiration dates.

And if you really can’t avoid the temptation of those inner grocery aisles, try placing an order online either for delivery or for pickup, services supermarkets are increasingly offering. It can let you run down your grocery list at home and stick items in your virtual cart, without in-store distractions.
