‘In God We Trust’ display proposal sparks debate

Klamath Falls, Ore. – A Klamath County Commissioner wants to display the words ‘In God we trust’ in the public hearing room of the Klamath County Government Center.

Commissioner Tom Mallams says Klamath County wouldn’t be the first to display the motto ‘In God we trust’ in a public building…

“There’s about 450 different cities, counties, and parishes that already have ‘In God we trust’ in their chambers.”

But, the proposal has sparked some lively debate.

David Anderson: “This country was founded on ‘In God we trust’, even long before it was put on our money. And that’s the way it should be.”

Richard Schmerbach: “I feel that religion has its place, but I don’t feel that it has a place in our government.”

Donna Mae Walker: “Yes, I believe that everything’s free speech – and I believe that they should have that. Because we have always believed in the Lord.”

Guy Sabin: “Well, if they’re going to print that up there, they should have everything else up there – different religions around the world should be named, too.”

John Potter: “I would like to see it there. I think that it’s a big part of our culture, and our society.”

Nancy Brace: “I don’t see that it will make any difference in anybody’s behavior. I’m not sure that even if they read it, that it will influence anybody’s particular behavior in any day.”

Commissioner Mallams says he’s ‘surprised’ by the controversy the proposal has generated…

“But very pleased, actually – I really am glad to see that discussion.”

And while no decision has been made, the debate continues.

At a recent work session, David and Carol Warren told the commissioners they’re collecting money for an ‘In God we trust’ plaque…so no taxpayer dollars will be involved.
