Man dead after officer-involved shooting, investigation underway

Medford, Ore. –Medford Police were called to the 3000 block of Juanipero in east Medford, after a woman reported a suicidal man had a gun and threatened to shoot police if they arrived.

The man left and on foot and was confronted by officers on the 900 block of La Loma where he was fatally shot by MPD officers.

The man has been identified as 40-year-old James Anthony Morris. Police say this is where an officer came into contact with Morris at about 11 last night.

They say Morris advanced toward the officer with his gun pointed in their direction, that’s when shots were fired.

Medford Police Chief Tim George wouldn’t say who pulled their trigger first or how many rounds were fired total. But did say Morris fired at least one round from his weapon.

They say the officer is okay but after the shooting Morris was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center where he died shortly after.

This was a traumatic event for the officer involved as well, not to mention the subjects family but this was a very dangerous situation, said Chief George.

Oregon State Police are leading the investigation. District Attorney Beth Heckert expects the case will be in front of a grand jury in about 3 to 4 weeks.

Here is the preliminary information from the investigation from the Medford Police Department:

That Morris left the residence of 3001 Juanipero Way depressed over relationship issues – and was threatening suicide.

That Morris was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, and made a threat to harm police as well.

That approximately 12 minutes after the initial call for service, a Medford Police Officer encountered Morris walking northbound in the 900 block of La Loma (residential area).

That Morris was armed with his firearm during this encounter, and advanced on the officer.

That there was an exchange of gunfire – with Morris firing at least one round. The officer fired multiple rounds.

That Morris suffered gunshot wounds – and was subsequently transported to Rogue Regional Medical center where he was pronounced dead.

Medford, Ore.– Oneman is dead after an officer involved shooting around 11pm Sunday night in Medford.

An officer responded to a report of a suicidal male armed with a gun in the 3300 block of Juanipero. The man also threatened to shoot police if they arrived.

He left the home, walking down La Loma Drive and Juanipero Way. One officer eyed the subject minutes later and police say when the officer came into contact with the man, shots were fired.

The officer is okay but the man was taken to Rogue Regency Medical Centerwhere he waspronounced deceased.

The Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit is at the front of theincident.

There is a road closure on La Loma Drivebetween Juanipero Way and Poppie Circle until further notice.
