OSP investigates fatal car crash on I5

Medford, Ore. — Oregon State Police are investigating a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 5 that left one person dead and another in the hospital.

It happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Monday in the south bound lanes at exit 43, north of Gold Hill. That’s where one lane is closed for construction.

Troopers say just as traffic merged into the slow lane, a car

rear-ended the car in front of it. That set off a chain of crashes involving a total of five cars.

Sgt. Tyler Lee with Oregon State Police says, “Essentially the first crash was the most severe and the rest were kind of subsequent crashes, rear-end style crashes.”

The person in the first car that was hit died. Another person was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

All lanes are now back open.
