Jackson Co., Ore — 911 calls about an erratic driver lead police to a fatal crash along Highway 62 Wednesday morning.
According to police and fire crews officers first received calls a driver on Highway 62 driving dangerously near milepost 16 around 6:00 Wednesday morning. Witnesses reported the driver appeared to be falling asleep or having a medical emergency.
When Oregon State Police troopers responded to the area, they found a crashed pickup truck with the driver, identified as 73-year-old Shady Cove resident Larry Ralph Lacy, still inside. He died before emergency crews could extricate him. No one else was in the vehicle.
A preliminary investigation shows the vehicle drove on the shoulder for several hundred yards before it became airborne. It then crashed through a fence and struck a tree.
The crash is still under investigation. Weather is not believed to be a factor.
