Trailer fire

Jacksonville, Ore., — A trailer fire on Highway 238 stopped traffic this afternoon, when it sparked a grass fire on the side of the road.

A truck pulling a trailer filled with hay caught fire near Mile Post 27 in Jacksonville, causing a grass fire around it.

The entire highway in that area was closed for a short time, before one lane was opened to traffic.

Fire crews from Applegate Valley, Jacksonville Fire and the Department of Forestry all responded to the scene.

“The driver saw it in his mirror and pulled over, and was able to disconnect the truck from the trailer before the vehicle itself was involved. So it was just the trailer and the hay that burnt in this case.” said Battallion Chief of Applegate Fire, Cody Goodnough.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation tonight, but about three tons of hay was lost.

The road is now back open.
