Ban On Underage Tanning Bill Passes In the Oregon House

Abill that would ban minors from using tanning beds unless they had a doctors note passed the Oregon House yesterday, with a vote of 38to 18. Bill 2896will now headto the senate.

Supporters say studies show a link between frequent exposure to ultraviolet rays and skin cancer; an alarmingstatistic considering Oregon has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the country.

Opponents from the tanning industry say the evidence is overblown however dozens of states are considering similar bills this year.

Last year, California and Vermont became the first states to adopt a ban on underage tanning.
