Morning Crash Kills 18-Year-Old

Around 8:15 Wednesday morning, police said 18-year-old Shelbi Stevens who was driving a 1985 Volkswagen Jetta, lost control around the 5900 block of North Foothills Road in Central Point.

According to police, her car slammed into a 2002 Toyota Camry, driven by 27-year-old Ashley Villarreal of Eagle Point.

According to police, Stevens who was a Medford resident, was found dead on scene.

“[The Jetta] came around the corner on foothills headed northbound, lost control, fishtailed, ended up sliding sideways right into the path of the oncoming southbound car,” said Sergeant Dace Cochran, a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, icy road conditions were to blame and at least in this case, seat belts didn’t help.

“When you have a side impact, you just don’t have any protection,” said Sgt. Cochran.

He said the driver of the other car, a 2002 Toyota Camry, is believed to be okay.

Meantime, also Wednesday morning, off Biddle Road near the airport…another car crash took place. Again, it looks to have been due to slick and icy road conditions.

The deputy we spoke with said seeding at the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport may have made road conditions a bit more slick.

According to NBC 5’s Meteorologist Jeff Heaton, there is a good chance of seeing the same, slippery conditions Thursday morning.

Police are cautioning people to take no chances and slow down on the road.
