Jackson County Sheriff's Department Hands Out 66 Pink Slips

66 employees with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office could lose their jobs, as the county try’s to negotiate a deal with the Employees Association.

Those pink slips would cut back on patrols in the county and search and rescue operations.

Sheriff Mike Winters confirmed the layoff notices were sent out on a seniority basis. That will affect employees hired starting in 2003.

The notice comes as surprise to some because there haven’t been any layoffs within the agency under mike winters’ tenure.

The sheriff didn’t go into details about the negotiations.

In order to go public with the matter, county officials would have to give the union 24 hours notice which was a rule agreed upon by both sides from the start of the negotiations.

The cuts would eliminate 24-hour patrols in Jackson county by the sheriff’s department.

Winters says he plans on calling other agencies to see how they plan to deal with the cuts.

Those 66 pink slips will give employees just 28 days notice that their jobs could be cut.

Winters also mentions two corrections deputies who are in the academy, they have been sent a notice saying they might not have a job when they get out.
