State Lawmakers Propose Social Media Privacy Bills

When it comes to an employer checking into an existing or potential employee’s background, just how far should they be able to go It’s a debate that’s hitting the state senate floor.

The debate focuses on social media in particular, and how much of it an employer should have access to.

Some Oregon lawmakers want to make sure the things you post on Facebook and other social network sites remain for your friends’ eyes only. Under a proposed state law, an employer wouldn’t be able to require employees or job applicants to divulge their passwords, or even “friend” them, as a condition of employment. The same rules would apply to coaches and teachers.

State legislators are considering three bill addressing the issue. Last year six states adopted similar legislation to what’s being proposed in Oregon. There was also an attempt to pass afederal law on the matter last year, but it failed in Congress.
