Tuesday is May Day, a holiday for and about workers rights.
It’s a celebration of the International Labor Movement and was first created right here in the United States, over one hundred years ago in Chicago, Illinois.
Occupy Wall Street protesters are calling for a world-wide strike on Tuesday in honor of the holiday.
The people who “occupied” New York City parks across the country last year, are calling for a “global” general strike all day today against, work, school, and just about any activity promoting commerce.
Marches and rallies are planned for New York City.
Closer to home, demonstration marches are planned in several major cities including Eugene, Portland, Seattle and Boise.
Besides the traditional march in Portland, rallies are expected at the Portland Public schools district headquarters and at Woodlawn Park in Northeast Portland.
Protest organizers say it’s a non-violent show of citizens who are fed upwith the “status quo”.
Locally, “Southern Oregon Jobs With Justice” is supporting the workers at the Ashland Food Co-op.
Just recently, the national labor relations board agreed to a settlement of an unfair labor practice charge.
This between the management staff of the Co-op, and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
Supporters will be arriving around 6 PM Tuesday night. This event is open to everyone.
