A little dog came to the Rogue Valley with a new lease on life, ready to help people who needed it most. But as it turns out, she is now the one needing your help.
Little Jazzie is much like a lot of people out there, she had a great job lined up, her health was doing okay, and she had a potential home on the horizon.
“She seemed to be a perfect fit for our hearing dogs program…so we rescued her and began her training,” said Vaughn Maurice, Dogs for the Deaf General Manager.
“She had all the signs,” began John Drach, a Training Manager at Dogs for the Deaf.
“She is alert, she is the right size, everything was going well,” he said.
That is, until a few weeks later when trainers noticed little Jazzie had a hip problem.
“We noticed she had a little bit of a limp […] Jazzie has a rare disorder called Legg-Calve-Perthes and it causes her a lot of pain,” said Drach.
The bottom falling out for one-year-old Jazzie, who trainers had just rescued from a Utah shelter.
“The dogs actually make contact by jumping up and using two paws that constant repetitive motion on that hip would be hard for her,” Drach said.
So now, Dogs for the Deaf, a non-profit organization connecting man’s best friend with people who need them — is asking for help on Jazzie’s behalf…the dog who might have helped someone else were it not for her failing hip which Drach said disqualified her from their hearing dog program.
“Even a five or $10 donation really helps,” said Maurice.
The organization, trying to raise about $650 to pay for the surgery Jazzie needs.
And after that, Drach said she will also need a home.
