Supreme Court Will Hear Arguments on Marriage Equality

Crowds have been lining up for days outside of theUS Supreme Court in Washington D.C. as the justices get ready to review oral arguents in two same sex marriage cases.

The court will hear oral arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act, otherwise known as D.O.M.A., and California’s Proposition 8, both oppose marriage equality.

At the

center of the debate– whether marriage should be considered a state or federal issue.

Opponents say marriage should be defined as only between a man and a woman.

But activist say that’s a violation of their civil rights.

Currently 9 states and washington d-c recognize same-sex marriage.

However, new poll numbers fromCNN show that 53% of voters now approve same sex marriage, a number that’s increased from 40% back in 2007.

“I want to live in a world post D.O.M.A.i want my children and my grandchildren to look back and go ‘Really were people that ignorant’ and that’s whatI pray for andI hold out hope,” said Gina DuQuenne, an Oregon Marriage Equality Activists.

Although the hearings begin this week, it won’t be until June when the court is expected to issue a ruling.
