Man Jumps From Bridge During Police Pursuit

This morning Grants Pass Police were involved in a foot chase with a man who had warrants out for his arrest.

Police say 34-year-old Gilbert Hays from Idaho ran from officers after approaching him near Riverside Park.

They say he fled on foot yelling that he didn’t want to go to jail and eventually jumped into the Rogue River.

“Honestly, it didn’t matter what his charge was, or what we were looking at. Right then it was his safety. Given the frigid conditions, we don’t want anybody to die, let alone somebody running just because he doesn’t want to be arrested.”

Sgt. Hamilton says upon booking Hays at the Josephine County Jail they found a knife on him. Nobody was injured.

Hays remains behind bars on 35-thousand dollars bail.
