Tracking a Killer: FBI Now Involved with Murder Investigation

The crime scene tape that lined the Yreka Creek area near Deer Creek Way on Wednesday was reduced to remnants Thursday afternoon. But while the tape was down, the murder investigation is ramping up.

“We are sifting through evidence and a lengthy list of people of interest with the Department of Justice and FBI,” said Lt. Dave Gamache with the Yreka Police Department.

Earlier this week a body was found near Yreka Creek. It’s the 2nd apparent murder in the same location in the last eight months. It has some residents who live across from the creek, uneasy.

“It don’t make me feel to good,” said Vica Hines, who is a nearby resident.

In order to create a safer area…less overgrown and with more people using the path, there are plans to turn stretches of the creek area into a safe greenway.

“A continuous greenway through the entire town, that is part of the vision of the master plan,” said Jerry Mosier, a member of the Yreka Creek Greenway Committee.

“It would also help the Yreka Police Department patrol the area…we expect the use of the area to change.”

However, even if the greenway becomes a reality, some residents who like spending time outdoors said they would still feel uncomfortable.

“It’s one place I would not walk. They say it’s beautiful by the creek, but I don’t feel safe,” said Freida Barger, a nearby resident.

Barger said she’s praying police will catch the killer. Meantime, police are still cautioning residents to be mindful when out walking near the creek and not to go alone.

Police are still being tight-lipped regarding the victim’s identity.

However, they say there should be an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday. We may know more then.
