Some good news for our men and women who have served. Tonight the US Bureau of Labor Statistics says veterans have a better chance of finding work than they did one year ago today. According to numbers, the unemployment rate for veterans ages 18 and up have dropped from 7.7% percent in October of 2011 to 6.3% percent in 2012. Local veterans affairs officials say they have created new work re-entry programs to ensure valley veterans find work.
“What the program allows us to do is to contract with private employers, federal agencies and put veterans in a three month program on a contract, if the veteran does a good job and we don’t have a lot of interventions then that employer hires that
person,” said Michael Kidwell.
Veterans who need help finding work can visit the veteran affairs SORCC campus in White City. And if you are a veteran or know a veteran looking for a job, well a big opportunity may be on the horizon. One of the largest veteran career fairs in Oregon will be held at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland on November 13th. The event will go from 9:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon. At this point, more than 120 employers are scheduled to show up.
