Gary Haugen Death Penalty Fight Heads to Oregon Supreme Court

An Oregon death row inmate says he no longer wants to live, but Governor John Kitzhaber won’t have it, and now the fight is heading to the Supreme Court.

Last fall, Governor Kitzhaber granted convicted murderer Gary Haugen a reprieve, even though he never requested it.

In August, a judge ruled that Haugen has the right to refuse the reprieve.

Back in 1984 Oregon voters reinstated the death penalty, but Kitzhaber says no executions will occur during his time in office.

The decision will now head to the state Supreme Court on March 14th.
