Football coaches statewide meet to improve the sport’s safety

Eagle Point, Ore. — Football coaches from all over the state gathered to learn how they can improve the safety of the sport.

USA Football Master Trainer Roy Thompson spent the day at Eagle Point High school teaching the high school coaches about concussions and heat strokes.

They spent the first half of the day in the classroom but then hit the field, practicing drills to learn safer blocking and tackling techniques.

“What we want to do is take steps to ensure that this game will last for kids for years to come,” said Thompson, “We want to make sure kids are playing the safe way, the right way. Keeping their head out of the tackle and I think it will make kids have a positive experience playing football. “

Thompson says one big thing is understanding the signs and symptoms of a concussion. And, when in doubt, sit the player out.
