TV News Anchor Claims She Was Fired For Marijuana Use

A Eugene television news anchor claims she was fired from her job because of her marijuana use outside of work. Cyd Maurer worked at KEZI, the ABC affiliate, as an anchor and reporter.

“Like any other work day, I showed up completely sober,” Maurer said. “I was stressed, on my way to a live shot in rush hour traffic behind the wheel of a work car, and I accidentally tapped the bumper of the car in front of me.”

Maurer said her employer required her to take a drug test following the car accident, which came back positive for marijuana. This happened in May, when the drug was not legal in Oregon.

Maurer said she was fired from her position because of this. NCB5 News reached out the General Manager at KEZI about Maurer. We were told they could not comment on personnel matters. When asked if the station now has a recreational marijuana use policy, we received the same answer.

According to a spokesperson from the Bureau of Labor and Industries, employers are free to fire a worker if the employee tests positive for marijuana, even when it’s legal. Employers can choose to enforce a zero tolerance policy or make changes to their policies.
