A strong earthquake struck off the coast of north-eastern Japan Friday morning. It happened around 5:18 P.M. local time.
Officials say the epicenter was 6.2 miles beneath the seabed and 150 miles offshore. So far, there are no reports of any injuries or damage.
A tsunami warning was issued from Japanese. Around an hour later, a three foot high tsunami hit the coast.
The tsunami warnings have since been lifted, however officials are advising people to stay on higher ground.
The West Coast Tsunami Warning Center says theres no tsunami danger for Alaska, Washington state, Oregon and California.
Friday morning’s earthquake hit in the same area as the devastating quake and tsunami in March of 2011.
Nearly 20,000 people were killed, and the damage triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.
The quake also affected the Pacific coast: Here in Oregon and California, coastal cities like Brookings, Port Orford, and Crescent City all saw harbor damage.
While many of them have rebuild from the damage some are still working with F.E.M.A. to repair their communities.
