A legacy of Learning

For 25 years, students have taken to forestland to plant seedlings in barren areas burned by wildfire.

“It’s about education,” said organizer Ross Roe of Roe Motors. “We haven’t had to cancel because of the rain in twenty-five years.”

They won’t have to this year either, as more than 1,200 students made their way to a section of Josephine County land to plant trees.

It’s the first time that Sams Valley students are getting in the dirt and learning hands-on in the forest.

“If we didn’t have the environment, we wouldn’t have most of the food that comes on our plates,” said fourth-grader Kaetriauna. She’s one of 18,000 students who have taken part in the program where more than 75,000 trees have been planted.

Students from around southern Oregon will continue their work through the week when the public will be able to finally tour their efforts on Saturday.
