Living up to their name: Today, Access is providing a leg up and breaking the cycle of poverty. The ribbon is cut… and the doors are open… at the new Hyde Park affordable housing in Ashland.
We’re told the need for these types of rentals is great – 20% of Ashland lives below poverty level. “Property purchases are high, makes rentals higher, it’s a challenge,” comments Jackie Schad, Executive Director of Access.
She tells us within hours of posting applications for Hyde Park: “We had eighteen people waiting in line, one family slept over night to be first in line.”
Through a grant from the City of Ashland, Access is hoping to help at least 6 families living below 50 to 60 percent of Oregon’s median family income, with these units.
The 6 units range from 1 to 3 bedrooms, with rent anywhere between $490 to $660 a month.
Not only will the homes help those in need, they’re also helping out the environment… with green features including: fiber cement siding, low voc paint, energy smart lighting and fans, and water saving plumbing.
“You can’t really build a life if you don’t have a stable place to come home at night, wash, rest, eat, so you can then go back out and earn resources,” says Schad. That stable environment part of what makes a house a home. Access providing the shelter, so the families can do the rest.
