Alleged Kidnapper Arrested

A Hermiston woman is safe tonight after allegedly being kidnapped for 6 days by a convicted sex offender. Her ordeal ended Tuesday with a gunshot in northern Klamath County…

28 year old Alberto Martinez is accused of kidnapping 26 year old Melody Mickel last Thursday.

Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb says that tips led police to a cabin in the Crescent Lake area. A standoff of several hours ended late Tuesday afternoon…

“He was seen with a knife coming out of the house, and there was a shot made – and hit his ear, apparently. And then they were able to make an arrest.”

A convicted sex offender, Martinez has spent seven years in prison for attempted rape. D.A. Caleb says Martinez is now headed back to Umatilla County to face new charges…

“There’s probably about three different counties where charges are possible, including Klamath Falls. We think there’s sex charges that we can run.”

Caleb adds that Melody Mickel is recovering from her ordeal as a hostage…

“Beaten up, demoralized, sexually assaulted – but that’s all hearsay.”

Martinez was taken to the Deschutes County Jail, pending transport to Umatilla County.

The name of the Oregon State Trooper that fired the shot that ended the standoff has not been released. That trooper has been placed in paid administrative leave, a routine procedure in officer-involved shootings.
