‘Boat House’ Future Uncertain

Big changes could be on the horizon for a concessions operation at Moore Park in Klamath Falls…

Klamath Falls Parks Superintendent Ken Hay notes that the former ‘Boat House’ at the south end of Upper Klamath Lake has been empty now for two years…

“The lease was for a sub-leaser to run a facility that would support boating, and aquatic activities on Upper Klamath Lake.”

But when the previous owners expanded their food menu, the city claimed they were violating an agreement on businesses in public parks.

Superintendent Hay agrees. “The advertising that the sub-leaser was doing was pretty obvious in the direction of running a restaurant.”

The current lease agreement is scheduled to expire at the end of this month. Owners Kevin and Carol Westfall say they want to renew that lease.

But the city says that due to the previous problems, and the extended vacancy, that lease might not be renewed.

We contacted Kevin Westfall, but at this time, he’s not releasing details about his plans for the building.

“So, we just want their input.” Says Kevin Hay. “And we also want to give the Westfalls an opportunity to give their input into our recommendation not to continue the lease.”

The Klamath Falls Parks Advisory Board is scheduled to review that concession agreement on Thursday, November 29th. But until then, the future of the boat house will remain foggy.

If the agreement is not renewed, the Westfalls would have until the end of the year to remove a deck from the building, and a portable dock from the property.
