Cow Creek Tribe responds to Gov. Brown’s opposition to Medford Casino

0408 Oregon GamblingMedford, Ore. — The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians is reacting to Governor Kate Brown’s voiced opposition of a casino in Medford.

In a statement, the Tribal Board says, “We appreciate the Governor’s leadership to protect the one casino one tribe commitment. The Governor joins Senators Wyden and Merkley and Congressmen Defazio and Blumenauer in opposing Coquille’s attempt to circumvent the rules to benefit one at the expense of others. We urge the Department of Interior and Bureau of Indian Affairs to take the state and local opposition to this effort in consideration when making it’s decision.”

This statement comes after the Governor called the Coquille Tribal chairperson on Friday, saying she would oppose the Cedars at Bear Creek Casino. A letter will be sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs next week.

Back in July, Jackson County Commissioners approved an inter-governmental agreement, giving them a voice during the environmental impact statement study. Since the study has yet to be released, the Coquille Tribe expressed their disappointment in her decision.
