A non-profit dog rescue in Northern California is scrambling to move nearly three dozen rescue dogs to a new location. The clock is ticking. The dogs, who were rescued from high-kill shelters, need help moving to another home in Siskiyou County in ten days or else face being evicted and perhaps euthanized. NBC5’s Laura Cavanaugh reports.
Last month we told you about Dexter’s Rescue Remedy, a non-profit animal shelter run by Charlot McClendon, who started saving dogs nine years ago.
In 2011, she moved to her current property near Horse Creek and continued to save canines on death row from high-kill shelters. McClendon has rescued and rehomed 400 dogs since she started. But last month, McClendon says she was served an eviction notice from her landlord. She claims he wanted 50% of her profits, something she wasn’t willing to do, considering she runs a non-profit.
Facing eviction, McClendon asked for additional time to find a suitable property for the homeless animals. A Siskiyou County judge ordered the animal rescue to vacate by February 15th.
It’s an emotional subject for Therese Holliday, who rescued her chihuahua, Sassy, from a shelter.
“I’ve met these dogs. They have so much love to give,” says Holliday.
And that’s why Holliday plans to volunteer with what she hopes will be a legion of volunteers to help the animal rescue this weekend. They’ve found a plot of land five miles outside of Yreka, but it has no water or power. Now with ten days left to move these homeless animals to a safe haven, both women say they hope this is a call to action for an army of compassionate volunteers.
