Driest Start To Any Year On Record

Despite our recent spring showers, 2013 is currently the driest start to a calendar year.

March isn’t officially over but weather officials say that we are already on tap to see one of the driest first three months of any year on record.

According to data from the National Weather Service, the Medford area is currently seeing the driest start ever to a calendar year.

“So far this year into the year, we are the driest on record. We had the ninth driest January. February was in the top 15 driest. And right now March is 3st driest,” said Brian Nieuwenhuis, National Weather Service.

In fact, Nieuwenhuis says we’ve only received 29.2% of the amount of precipitation that’s expected at this point in the calendar year.

However, we are at 102% of what’s expected for the water year, whichstartedSeptember 1.

Historically as of March 25 for the calendar year, Medford only had 1.63 inches of rain, the last time numbers were that low were back in 1992 and before that in the 1920’s.

But no recent amount of significant rainfall also means there’s a possible danger to our area.

Officials say the Medford area needs about 4 inches of rain by the end of the month to be at normal level.
